Care Guide

Planting

Plant California Goldenrod in full sun or part shade in a location where it can spread naturally - it thrives in adaptable soil and tolerates both clay and dry conditions, so drainage isn't a concern. Space plants 1–3 feet apart depending on how quickly you want coverage, since this is a low-maintenance groundcover. Plant in fall or early spring for best establishment.

After Planting

Water weekly for the first summer to establish the plant, then cut back to once monthly or less once established, as this is a low-water native. Expect the plant to go deciduous and look somewhat unruly in winter - this is normal behavior, not a sign of trouble. Prune back in late winter or early spring to tidy the plant before new growth emerges. The biggest mistake is overwatering: this plant wants dry conditions, so err on the side of less water rather than more.
