Care Guide
Planting
Plant California Dichondra in full sun where it can spread as a groundcover. This native thrives in the Bay Area's low to moderate water conditions and naturally grows on open slopes and moist fields at low elevations, so choose a location with good drainage. Plant in fall or winter when the plant can establish roots during the cooler, wetter season.
After Planting
Water moderately during the first growing season to help establish the plant, then transition to low water once it's settled in (typically by year two). Dichondra is a low-maintenance groundcover once established - allow it to spread naturally across its intended area, and prune only to contain it within your desired space. The main mistake is overwatering after the first season; this plant is adapted to California's dry conditions and needs far less water than most gardeners instinctively provide.
