Care Guide

Planting

Plant Beach Suncup in full sun with fast-draining, sandy soil - it thrives in conditions similar to its native coastal dunes. Space plants to account for their sprawling, trailing growth habit. Fall through early spring is ideal for planting in the Bay Area, giving the plant time to establish before summer.

After Planting

Water weekly during your first summer to help the plant establish, then taper to once a month or less once established. The biggest mistake is overwatering; this plant evolved in sandy dunes and prefers dry conditions, so err on the side of caution. Expect potential summer dormancy in its first year, though supplemental water may encourage year-round blooming. Prune lightly to shape the spreading stems as needed, and enjoy flowers from spring through winter.
