Care Guide

Planting

Plant Ruby Chalice Clarkia in full sun where it will get direct light all day. It's highly adaptable to soil conditions and will tolerate fast, medium, or slow drainage, so don't stress about amending - just make sure water isn't pooling. Plant in fall or early spring to establish roots before the growing season, spacing plants about 12 inches apart.

After Planting

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish the plant, then cut back drastically once established - you're aiming for just once a month or less during summer. The biggest mistake Bay Area gardeners make is overwatering; this California native actually thrives on neglect and will rot if kept too wet. Expect blooms from March through August, and let seed pods dry on the plant if you want to collect seeds for next year.
