Care Guide
Planting
Plant Woodbalm in full sun or partial shade in a location with fast-draining soil - this is non-negotiable, as it's native to chaparral and won't tolerate boggy conditions. Space plants 5–8 feet apart if you're using them as a hedge. Fall through early spring is the best planting window in the Bay Area. This evergreen shrub is cold-hardy to -5°F, so it will thrive in most Bay Area microclimates.
After Planting
Water weekly during your plant's first summer, then taper to a maximum of 3 times per month once established, since Woodbalm prefers low to moderate water. Prune as needed to maintain shape, especially if you're growing it as a hedge - the Calscape data doesn't specify timing, but spring after flowering (which happens March–May) is typical for California natives. The #1 mistake is overwatering: this plant comes from dry chaparral, and wet soil will kill it faster than drought will.
