Care Guide

Planting

Plant deerweed in full sun in a spot with medium drainage - it tolerates a wide variety of soils, so don't overthink the soil prep. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart to account for their mature height. Plant in fall or winter to let roots establish before the dry season, and avoid planting in areas that stay wet.

After Planting

Water weekly for the first summer to help establish roots, then cut back to once a month or less once established. Expect the plant to drop its small leaves during dormancy - this is normal deciduous behavior. Deerweed tolerates cold down to 15°F, so most Bay Area winters won't stress it. The biggest mistake is watering too much; this is a drought-adapted plant that will rot with excess moisture, especially in winter.
