Care Guide

Planting

Plant Beard-Tongue in full sun with fast-draining soil - it tolerates a variety of soil types as long as drainage is excellent, which is non-negotiable for this species. Space plants according to their mature height of 1–3 feet. This California native thrives in Bay Area conditions and is deer resistant, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardens mimicking foothill and woodland settings.

After Planting

Water weekly during the first growing season to establish the plant, then transition to minimal supplemental water once established - this is a drought-tolerant native and the #1 mistake is overwatering. Expect blooms from March through August, and deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued flowering. Year one focuses on root development; the plant will gradually fill in and require less attention as it matures.
