Planting
Plant your Royal Jacob's-ladder in partial shade - it naturally grows in open and moist forests, so avoid full sun exposure. This rhizomatous perennial prefers moderate to high moisture, so choose a spot with consistently moist soil and good drainage to prevent root rot. Space plants about 1 to 2 feet apart since they can reach up to 3 feet tall. Plant in spring or fall when the Bay Area soil is naturally moist.
After Planting
Water regularly during your first growing season to keep soil consistently moist, especially through the summer months. Once established in year two, you can reduce watering to a moderate schedule, though this plant still prefers moisture over drought. The foliage may die back in winter as a dormant perennial - this is normal. The biggest mistake is letting the soil dry out completely; Royal Jacob's-ladder won't tolerate drought conditions, so check soil moisture weekly rather than waiting for visible wilting.
