Care Guide
Planting
Plant Desert Candle in full sun with fast-draining soil - this desert native won't tolerate wet feet. Space plants to allow air circulation, and plant in spring or fall when temperatures are mild. It germinates readily from seed and works well in containers if your garden soil tends toward clay or moisture retention.
After Planting
Desert Candle is an annual, so it completes its life cycle in a single season and won't require long-term establishment watering. Water minimally once established - this plant is adapted to extremely low water conditions, so err on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering. The biggest mistake Bay Area gardeners make is treating it like a typical annual that needs regular water; let the desert do the talking and water only during the driest stretches.
