Care Guide

Planting

Plant Carolina bugbane in partial shade to deep shade, mimicking its native wooded habitat. This rhizomatous perennial grows 3 to 5 feet tall, so give it space to spread; plant it where its large palmate leaves (up to 40 centimeters wide) won't crowd neighboring plants. Since this plant thrives in moist wooded areas, choose a location with consistently moist soil and good drainage to prevent rot.

After Planting

Water regularly during your first growing season to keep the soil consistently moist as the plant establishes its rhizomes. Expect the plant to go dormant in winter as a perennial herb; simply leave the dead foliage in place to protect the rhizomes underground. The main mistake Bay Area gardeners make is planting this shade-lover in too much sun or letting it dry out - remember it evolved in moist forests, not dry gardens.
