Care Guide
Planting
Plant Merriam's Coral Bells in full sun to part shade - it's adaptable to both, so choose based on your Bay Area microclimate. This native thrives in rocky, well-draining soil similar to its Klamath Mountain habitat, so amend heavy clay with compost or perlite before planting. Space plants about 12 inches apart since they spread via rhizomes. Fall through early spring is ideal for planting in the Bay Area.
After Planting
Water weekly during your first summer to establish a strong root system, then taper off as the plant matures and becomes drought-tolerant. Merriam's Coral Bells is deer resistant and compact (under a foot tall), making it excellent for containers or rock gardens - no special pruning needed beyond removing spent flower stalks. The biggest mistake is overwatering; once established, this plant prefers drier conditions and will rot in soggy soil, so let the soil dry between waterings.
