Care Guide
Planting
Plant Munz's Cholla in full sun with well-draining, sandy or gravelly soil - drainage is critical, so amend heavy Bay Area clay if needed. Space plants 4–6 feet apart since they'll reach 3–6 feet tall at maturity. Fall through early spring is ideal for planting in the Bay Area, giving the plant time to establish before summer heat.
After Planting
Water weekly during the first growing season to help establish roots, then taper off significantly by mid-summer as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Once established, Munz's Cholla needs very little water and thrives on rainfall alone in most Bay Area locations. The #1 mistake is overwatering - this cholla rots in wet soil, so err on the side of dry, especially in winter when the plant is essentially dormant.
