Care Guide
Planting
Plant your California lacefern in full sun to part shade. This fern naturally grows in rock cracks and crevices, so it thrives in well-draining conditions - if your soil tends to stay wet, amend it heavily with gravel or sand, or consider growing it in a container where you can control drainage more easily. The Calscape data doesn't specify a planting season, so plant when you bring it home and can water it in during the first establishment period.
After Planting
Water your lacefern weekly through its first summer to help it establish, then gradually reduce watering as the plant matures and adapts to Bay Area conditions. The biggest mistake is overwatering: this fern evolved in dry, rocky habitats and won't tolerate soggy soil. Once established, let the plant guide you - if the fronds start to look papery or brown, it may need slightly more water, but err on the side of dry rather than wet.
