Care Guide

Planting

Plant your rayless ragwort in full sun, where it thrives in the dry mountain and foothill conditions of its native habitat. This plant prefers the relatively dry conditions found in California woodlands, so choose a spot with excellent drainage - avoid areas that collect water or stay boggy. Space plants about 2-3 feet apart, as they grow up to 3 feet tall and spread accordingly.

After Planting

Water regularly during establishment in your first year, especially through the dry Bay Area summer, then gradually reduce watering as the plant's fleshy root system develops - rayless ragwort is adapted to drier conditions once established. As a biennial or perennial, expect modest growth in year one as it builds its root system; flowering and fuller growth typically appear in subsequent years. The main mistake is overwatering; this plant's native dry habitat means it prefers lean conditions, so err on the side of less water rather than more.
