Care Guide

Planting

Plant Flatface Calicoflower in full sun to part shade in moist, well-draining soil - it thrives in the wet conditions of vernal pools, so don't let it dry out completely. Plant in fall or early spring to catch the blooming season (April through June). This is a low grower (reaching just 3–9 inches tall), so it works well in the front of beds or in containers where you can control moisture.

After Planting

Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist through the growing season, especially during dry spells. This is an annual plant, so it will naturally decline after blooming and setting seed in early summer - let it go dormant rather than trying to extend its life. The biggest mistake is planting it in dry soil or letting it drought out; it's a wetland specialist and will struggle in typical California garden conditions unless you commit to supplemental watering.
