Care Guide

Planting

Plant Jepson's Woolly Sunflower in full sun where it will get at least 6 hours of direct light daily. This native California shrub thrives in the dry, well-draining conditions of chaparral and oak woodland habitats, so choose a spot with excellent drainage and avoid areas that collect water. Space plants about 2-3 feet apart to accommodate their mature height of 2-3 feet. Plant in fall or early winter to establish roots before the dry season.

After Planting

Water weekly during your plant's first summer to help it establish, then gradually reduce watering as it matures - this is a drought-tolerant plant that prefers dry conditions once established. Expect blooms from March through May. The biggest mistake Bay Area gardeners make is overwatering; this plant evolved for California's dry season and will struggle with summer irrigation or heavy clay soils. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, but remember this is a low-maintenance native that asks very little once established.
